Axillary Crutches Market Continues to Grow with an Indian Tech Startup Flexmotiv Launching the World’s First Automotive Crutches, Having the Potential to Stand on Its Own
Crutches
are available in various forms - metal, wood, and plastic. Wood ones are often
preferred as they look better and also because they are very comfortable to
use. Plastic ones tend to be quite sturdy but are heavy and not as comfortable
to sit on. Of course, metal crutches have the advantage of durability as well
as being relatively easy to carry and put on and off. People with walking
disabilities typically require axillary crutches. These crutches transfer the
weight from the legs to arms/shoulders and support the movement of individuals
who are unable to do so due to some form of disability or fracture or
paralysis. As per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), around 8.2 million
adults in the U.S. were suffering from some type of walking disability in 2017.
The World Health Organization (WHO)’s World Report on Disability 2011 suggests
that around 15% of the global population lives with some form of disability, of
whom 2-4% experience significant difficulties in functioning. Thus, such
factors can stimulate growth of the axillary crutches market in the near
future.
As far as
geographic impact is concerned, developed regions such as North America have
shown promising signs for the axillary
crutches market. This is due to the fact that the U.S. is house to many
key market players such as Cardinal Health Inc., GF Health Products Inc., and
more. Besides, continuous product advancements and the advent of novel designs
and shapes can boost the regional axillary crutches market growth. Similarly,
emerging economies in Asia Pacific are gaining rapid traction due to rising
geriatric population.
Recently,
in August 2019, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi alumni startup
Flexmotiv launched the world’s first automotive crutches, having the potential
to stand on their own.
Generally,
crutches are used for limited purposes only. They are not designed for everyday
walking. The wearer should keep in mind that one of the major disadvantages of
crutches is that they do not provide comfort as one walks. Moreover, the users
should ensure that the crutches he or she purchases are of the best quality to
ensure that the users do not face any problems related to discomfort in the
long run. However, the emergence of alternative devices has resulted in a slow
demand for axillary crutches. These alternative devices include canes, walkers,
and wheelchairs, which are restricting growth of the axillary crutches market.
Another
part of the population that dearly requires axillary crutches is elderly
people. The geriatric population is increasing rapidly worldwide with WHO
estimating that by 2050, the geriatric population will reach over 2 billion.
Elderly people often experience difficulties in walking, which could boost the
demand for crutches. Therefore, these factors can augment the axillary crutches
market growth in the near future.
