Hernia Mesh Devices Market Is Mainly Driven By the Increasing Incidence of Hernia

Hernia is one of the common conditions affecting a large percentage of population worldwide. Over one million hernia repair surgeries are performed each year, many of which use hernia mesh. Hernia mesh, or surgical mesh, is a medical device used to support and hold organs in place after surgery, attached to the area surrounding the hernia with glue, staples, or stitches. Hernia mesh are of three types, such as biologic, composite, or synthetic. Hernia mesh devices are surgical meshes that are used to provide additional support to weak/damaged tissue. Growth of the hernia mesh devices market is mainly driven by the Increasing incidence of hernia.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), every year, more than one million hernia repairs are performed in the United States. Around 800,000 are to repair inguinal hernias and the rest are for other types of hernias. Hiatal hernias, femoral hernia, umbilical hernia, abdominal hernia, and inguinal hernia are some the common types of hernia. The U.S. FDA considers the mesh (hernia mesh devices) used for hernia repair surgeries to be safe, but admits that complications may occur in rare cases. The most severe form of these complications can be fatal. More than 3 million hernia mesh repair surgeries are carried out worldwide every year.

Henceforth, with the increasing incidence of hernia, the demand for hernia mesh devices is also increasing, which, in turn, is propelling the hernia mesh devices market growth. For instance, in February 2021, W. L. Gore & Associates announced that GORE SYNECOR Intraperitoneal Biomaterial is now available in Europe, Middle East, and South Africa. It is designed to address unmet needs in complex hernia repair, providing rapid vascularity, and permanent strength with a low profile for single, effective hernia repair. Moreover, increasing adoption of minimally invasive techniques for hernia repair is one of the major factor responsible for the hernia mesh devices market growth.

In minimally invasive hernia repair, the surgeon uses a laparoscope to look inside the abdomen during the procedure. Furthermore, growth of the hernia mesh devices market is attributed to increasing use of mesh in hernia repair surgeries. According to the FDA, hernia mesh is used in around 90% of those surgeries. This is mainly attributed to the overall increase in population, especially obese and geriatric population, and improvements in healthcare systems that have enabled the early detection and treatment of hernia. As a result, an increase in the aging population is expected to boost overall hernia incidence in the coming years
